About nxt.gen
Next Generation, or nxt.gen, is a project aimed at 13 to 25 year olds living in South East London. It provides opportunities for young people with an interest in music to develop their talents and to combine musical skills with other creative areas, such as drama, dance and visual arts.
Through regular workshop sessions and intensive Summer School activities, participants can learn new performance skills, explore new art forms and collaborate with new friends. All the sessions are lead by professional practising artists whose objective is to help the participants to develop their own creative voices.
nxt.gen is built around a structured process developed by the artictic directors. The participants use this to devise their own songs, raps, poetry, music and drama. As well as learning new skills, techniques and developing their ability to create original work, they also perform their work in front of a live audience.
Struan is co-artistic director of the nxt.gen project with Simon Deacon. nxt.gen is supported by Youth Music and Art of Regeneration.
nxt.gen is currently seeking new sources of funding. If you can help, or would like to know more, please contact Struan.

Videos
The two videos available here were made during 2005. The first one was filmed over a week-long half-term intensive workshop and illustrates some aspects of the process used to create new performance works by nxt.gen. The second video shows the culmination of the nxt.gen activities in 2005 - a performance by over 30 of the young people and artists who had participated throughout the year. The performance took place in front of a live and hugely enthusiastic audience at The Albany in Deptford, London on the 20th December.
The videos are most suitable for a broadband internet connection. They are compatible with the Apple QuickTime 7 media player. You can download or upgrade your version of the media player from here:
